Our environmental performance.

How we did in the Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) League Tables

In 2011 we met our commitment to integrate environmental legislation across our business. We did this by incorporating environmental carbon data disclosure into public reporting across the Group in accordance with the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme.

In the most recent league tables published by the Department of Energy and Climate Change, Legal & General Group Scored 1,209th out of 1,301 participants for our first year’s performance. See the tables

Our long-term strategy is to manage year-on-year reductions in the resources needed to run our business. We didn’t score for early action metrics because only a small number of our properties have half-hourly meters installed and we haven’t joined the Carbon Trust Standard. We see these as short-term incentives to help companies just starting out on their environmental journey.

Our performance in summary

To ensure long-term improvements, we set two three-year targets at the end of 2008 to tackle our two main environmental impacts – carbon dioxide emissions and waste. See our performance and targets

We are now in the first year of our new three year strategy, which commenced in April 2012. See our Targets 2012 – 2014. Therefore our 2011/2012 environmental performance data will form a new baseline against which performance will be measured.

In terms of what we produce, we look at our impacts in relation to the number of employees or customer policies we have. In 2011/12, we have seen a 4% reduction in business versus 2010 and consquently our use of core natural resources has reduced (see the table below).

  • Car-based business miles reduced by 4.4% since 2010
  • Energy use (per policy) reduced 8% since 2010;
  • 32% less waste (per UK employee) since 2010;
  • 4% drop in landfill since 2010;
  • Office copier paper reduced by 5.3% since 2010
